I'm pleased to say that version 2.0 of these smashing rules is now available

>. Author Nigel Emsen & I have worked hard over the last two weeks
to bring the fast play mechanisms in the rules to the fore. They are
well worth reading.
</p>
<p>
I've written quite a lot about
<a href="/2020/09/editing-wargame-rules.html">our collaboration</a>
recently. So here I'd like to: muse a little about how I approach
editing; show some pages before and after editing; and finish by offering a
few tips for would be authors.
</p>
<p>
<a name='more'></a><b>Approach</b><br />
I believe wargames rules are essentially technical documents. They can, and
probably should, be approached in a user friendly way but to work as rules
they have to have a sound structure and provide a consistent framework for
players.
</p>
<p>
Editing anything is both subjective, as in this doesn't look right, and
objective, as in this doesn't work. Throw in a need to apply some
consistency in layout etc and you get the basics of my approach to
editing. In essence it's a lot of copy editing with a bit of sub editing
thrown in for good measure.
</p>
<p>
Fresh eyes always see things as they are, not as they are intended to be. So
when editing there's a lot of tidying up and moving text around but I try
really hard to capture the author's intentions. After all they are not
my rules. My job is to make sure they are as easy to understand as
possible.
</p>
<p>
However, there always comes a point where I uncover something that is either
illogical, far too complex, or doesn't fit with the intent of the author.
Then I have to define the problem and come up with options to fix it.
</p>
<p>
<b>Before & After</b><br />
Here you can see two pages side by side. The page on the left is the
original. The page on the right is the edited version. A word of
warning: to be legible the images below are probably best viewed full screen:

/></a>
</p>
<p>
<b>Tips</b><br />
Here are a few tips to bear in mind when writing, or editing, your own rules:
</p>
<ul>
<li>
Do not mix any of the following in one paragraph or list: explanations,
definitions, or process details ("+1 in melee" etc).
</li>
<li>
Always be on the lookout for repetition. It can, and does, introduce textual
inconsistencies. Remove it wherever possible and only use sparingly
for emphasis.
</li>
<li>
Always structure things with the reader in mind but do not presume any prior
knowledge .
</li>
<li>
Be consistent. This applies to terminology, abbreviations, and the use
of such things as emphasis, italics (rarely) and capitals.
</li>
<li>
Start each section on a new page and do not worry about the page breaks
until very near the end.
</li>
<li>Use all the spelling and grammar tools available.</li>
</ul>
<p>
You can see many of the tips in action in the sample pages above but here's a
written, hypothetical example:
</p>
<blockquote>
You may wish to describe your approach to generals. You are tempted to
extend this section to cover how to structure commands and to list the
general's melee factor(s). This seems logical as the command structure
and melee factors flow from how you deal with generals.
<br /><br />
My advice is don't. This will be just too much for the reader to handle
in one go. The three pieces of information are important but separate.
They lose impact when merged.
<br /><br />
The main text (approach & command structure) will be much easier to read
split into separate sections. In fact, people may only need to read
about your approach once but they may read the command structure section many
times. Separate sections make this easy.
<br /><br />
Moving the melee factors to the melee section will reduce duplication as well
make it easier for the reader to find things later.
</blockquote>
<p>
I understand rules are seldom written in a linear fashion. Bits are added,
changed and generally tweaked during development and play testing. But be
aware that, from the point of view of a first time reader, this can result in
a somewhat random draft with a disjointed flow.
</p>
<p>
Use the editing process to tackle these issues, impose a little structure and
you may end up with a best selling ste of rules.
</p>
<p>As always comments are very welcome.</p>

In the last week I've written four posts illustrating how to improve the
presentation of wargames rules with basic table design and formatting. In case
you missed them they are:
</p>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>

title="Vexillia Portfolio: Tables & Text in Wargaming Rules"
>Tables & Text in Wargaming Rules</a
>
</li>
</ul>
<p>
This might seem a lot of work for a free set of American Civil War rules from
the internet. In some ways it is and in others it isn't. It's good
to keep your hand in but the strong structure underpinning these rules made it
both quick and fun.
</p>
<a name='more'></a>
<p>
As I said in my original post the rules are only 29 pages, with a clear, well
spaced layout. They are very easy to read with a good structure and lots
of useful tables etc. You can see for yourself: visit
<a
href="https://www.wargamevault.com/product/284949/Rebels-and-Yankees?affiliate_id=715664"
>Wargame Vault</a
>
where the rules are a "Pay What You Want" download.
</p>
<p>
Anyway, it been a while since I did any editing work so I spent a few hours
editing the text surrounding the tables I'd redesigned. After a while I
thought I'd better contact the author;
Nigel Emson. I did and five
hectic days later Nigel has a fully edited set of rules which he is going to
release as version 2.0 in the near future.
</p>
<p>
As I expected there were a few glitches which Nigel soon sorted out. There
were one or two "do you really mean that" and "that's not what is says on page
12" discussions but that's why rules should be edited. Nigel also took the
opportunity to streamline certain mechanisms so version 2.0 should be even
smoother in play.
</p>
<p>
One benefit of the editing process is that the layout has been tightened up.
The page count has dropped from 29 to 26. I cut one page from the front
section and two from the rules themselves. A 10% drop isn't bad especially as
I didn't make a special effort to minimise white space in the layout.
</p>
<p>
<b>Booklet Printing</b><br />
As I'll need a print copy for final proof reading, and to play the rules, I decided
to make an A5 booklet from the A4 originals. Luckily, there's software that
can do that for you.
</p>
<p>
In essence the software puts two pages on one side of A4 (reducing the size
of each page to A5 in the process) and does it in an order that, when printed
double sided and folded, gives you a nice booklet.
</p>
<p>
Booklet printing also saves paper. The 26 page rule book was reduced to 13 A4
pages which used only 7 sheets of paper when printed on both sides.
</p>
<p>
For booklet print on Linux I use
<a
href="https://github.com/Boomaga/boomaga"
title="Boomaga provides a virtual printer for CUPS to print preview or print booklets"
>Boomaga</a
>
which is in the standard Ubuntu 20.04 repositories so it's easy to install and
use. Windows equivalents are available.

In what's turning into a bit of a series, I've looked at how to tweak table
design for clarity and speed of use during a game. Now I'd like to look at
adding impact to text with tables.

I've also

but I remain in two minds about colouring the "Zealous" line. On balance it
does look slightly better coloured.
</p>
<p>
Overall, the use of a table gives the information more impact and a much more
compact presentation.
</p>
<p>
This transformation also highlights one of the traps for authors when writing
text definitions: the inclusion of related text that really would be better
elsewhere. I know all about this trap as I've fallen foul of it many
times. In this instance the text is mixing definitions with the justification
of a specific application favoured by the author.
</p>
<p>
The extra text about Confederate troops in 1861-62 is better, and more
logically placed, in the very next section just after the table that players
use to assign resilience to their troops at the start of the game:

/></a>
</p>
<p>
The improvement is clear but there was something nagging me. Mainly it
was the Command modifiers. These had to share a merged cell primarily for
space reasons but also for extra brevity and clarity. However there's
another issue: these modifers are optional and are part of the advanced rules.
This needs to be made clear in the table somehow.
</p>
<p>
<a name='more'></a>At this point I realised that basic table design has its limits.
By chance I was reading twitter when I came across some sample pages
from another rule set and the answer became obvious: colour. A few
minutes later I'd produced this version:
</p>
<p>
<a
href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Knb6FH5krqjN_CZ7_6ENX1aDbAyD6TSqkbi7GhFRryM8gl7-rIPzZwLzYe-QiGOWxbCFoRNqZC9imnk0zyG-bEUn4SEAM7rL-gUAgv2nZjxGg9llcxMZnv4LBoqfSF20nDlAo4wAlYE/s582/20200912+-+Rebels_Yankees+05.png"
><img
src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Knb6FH5krqjN_CZ7_6ENX1aDbAyD6TSqkbi7GhFRryM8gl7-rIPzZwLzYe-QiGOWxbCFoRNqZC9imnk0zyG-bEUn4SEAM7rL-gUAgv2nZjxGg9llcxMZnv4LBoqfSF20nDlAo4wAlYE/s450/20200912+-+Rebels_Yankees+05.png"
/></a>
</p>
<p>
This table removes the merged "In line of command" cell because it breaks the
colour scheme. The use of the "LoC", with an explanation in the footer,
solves the resultant space and clarity issues. More importantly, the
renamed Generals group can now be marked as optional by the use of an asterisk
in the first column.
</p>
<p>
The first column has been left white to draw the eye. Of course it too
could be coloured, but not alternating colour, however I felt the colouring should
be as minimal as possible.
</p>
<p>
The same scheme can also
<a
href="https://work.vexillia.me.uk/2020/09/tables-redundancy-in-wargames-rules.html"
>improve other tables</a
>
like this one:
</p>
<p>
<a
href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-5bWtFCBiSwGnjlg3RYZwIUkoh-fDO_Ldfc1ojXFvxyBbPxDyu99Rdue0LIMygKDT4vZeGr-1BrsSQnIFwuTjjGPODpkyWTA6mNjno8oV99S0vJZNq2bnp6NjgXVmju6GAoUOg6B1Pcc/s582/20200912+-+Rebels_Yankees+06.png"

src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-5bWtFCBiSwGnjlg3RYZwIUkoh-fDO_Ldfc1ojXFvxyBbPxDyu99Rdue0LIMygKDT4vZeGr-1BrsSQnIFwuTjjGPODpkyWTA6mNjno8oV99S0vJZNq2bnp6NjgXVmju6GAoUOg6B1Pcc/s450/20200912+-+Rebels_Yankees+06.png"
/></a>
</p>
<p>
Finally, to balance the table the footer text has been emboldened. That's it
for now.

Here's another refurbishment of a table from
<a

>Nigel Emsen's</a
>
American Civil War rules "Rebels & Yankees". This time it shows the
the benefit of explicit grouping to improve ease of use in play.
</p>
<a name='more'></a><b>[3] Resilience Situation Adjustment Table (Page 11): </b>
<p></p>
<p>
This is the original:<br /><br />
<a
href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjco-3Be9P2E4rs7qKZoOCORp7Cbs3wLbD07k6VSvACaWzlccAe2zzFhVcpIQ_-dhl1rIaGOgYBGpzwfeooXcEYkdgChLNmB4jdiV-Ie6Z-egWK1NKGoGaw1SWbZIa26xcUrq-I_Y2b1IA/s543/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+03.png"
><img
src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjco-3Be9P2E4rs7qKZoOCORp7Cbs3wLbD07k6VSvACaWzlccAe2zzFhVcpIQ_-dhl1rIaGOgYBGpzwfeooXcEYkdgChLNmB4jdiV-Ie6Z-egWK1NKGoGaw1SWbZIa26xcUrq-I_Y2b1IA/s450/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+03.png"
/></a>
</p>
<p>
It's relatively clean but it looks intimidating at first sight. Once
read a few times it's actually very starighforward. To bring out the
underlying structure and overall simplicity I just added a little grouping:<br /><br />
<a
href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioppixJaaRAYO0lczJWBd-AuTa0oXsn1H4ga1H96EwXBKtJEoh575S1JZ_ia9fW0pmplfPumknlCbqPPQky8fOOFWveT4l3-M-2f4LAxKlklhhTlnQ9E4exmLTlPJX75XDUmFMv8i9vnk/s582/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+03a.png"
><img
src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioppixJaaRAYO0lczJWBd-AuTa0oXsn1H4ga1H96EwXBKtJEoh575S1JZ_ia9fW0pmplfPumknlCbqPPQky8fOOFWveT4l3-M-2f4LAxKlklhhTlnQ9E4exmLTlPJX75XDUmFMv8i9vnk/s450/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+03a.png"
/></a>
<br /><br />
Hey presto! This should be so much quicker to scan in play not least
because it enforces a little structure to the list and hence to applying the
modifiers. It will also transfer directly to a quick reference sheet.
</p>
Vexilliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06568117694302239705noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4144713597805238177.post-35760668249171514762020-09-10T12:25:00.026+01:002023-04-27T12:24:25.582+01:00Tables & Redundancy in Wargames Rules<p>
I recently discovered a free series of rules from
<a
href="https://www.wargamevault.com/browse/pub/12033/Nigel-Emsen?affiliate_id=715664"
>Nigel Emsen</a
>
and was particularly taken by the set for the American Civil War: Rebels &
Yankees.
<br /><br />
At only 29 pages, with a clear well spaced layout, the rules are very easy to
read with a good structure and lots of useful tables etc. If they play
as quickly as they read I'll be well pleased.
</p>
<p>
I did spot a few things that I would class as glitches in table layout and
design but that doesn't detract from the rules themselves. However, I would like to
use them to highlight how simple changes can have a large impact of clarity
and readability.
</p>
<p>
</p><a name='more'></a><b>[1] Resilience Table (Page 10): </b>
<br /><br />
Here's the portion of the page which defines the process and the lookup table.
<br /><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGHILZm8yoSna-32ZwjLGeljKOJYeCpeCtqS4URTJhkoMjTweL3Yu3a42Hay278IH6Gv-dchCY7CngBY3Ml7U2lflkS-_SgGU9mILhyN__XupKTKJlTcg-tIzWCzUC3nDkgi7DSu8oy08/s539/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+01.png">
<img class="hoverZoomLink" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGHILZm8yoSna-32ZwjLGeljKOJYeCpeCtqS4URTJhkoMjTweL3Yu3a42Hay278IH6Gv-dchCY7CngBY3Ml7U2lflkS-_SgGU9mILhyN__XupKTKJlTcg-tIzWCzUC3nDkgi7DSu8oy08/s450/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+01.png" /></a>
<br /><br />
Looking at this in detail:
<br />
<p></p>
<p></p>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>
Rolling 1d6 cannot give a score of more than six so the 6+ is misleading.
</li>
<li>Logically, the bands are not exclusive as 3+ includes 5 and 6.</li>
<li>Novices may not know when Gettysburg was so the periods are "loose".</li>
<li>The Zealous classification looks strange in a column of dates.</li>
</ul>
<p>
A quick rework gives this table:
</p>
<p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfOGf04ShqVpKCTkQUpkaOVMWRzW_OFhlbFePIRCDxL4_JzRdF_NONpe9LsZWLzKypgwDOcrv2lxzB9c2oxrd_ZMwvY4Uq0Do5Pe9kaN2eIxNKOaWVRQgI1s7iuTVwIdMSAFvWUcB0Ucw/s582/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+01a.png">
<img class="hoverZoomLink" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfOGf04ShqVpKCTkQUpkaOVMWRzW_OFhlbFePIRCDxL4_JzRdF_NONpe9LsZWLzKypgwDOcrv2lxzB9c2oxrd_ZMwvY4Uq0Do5Pe9kaN2eIxNKOaWVRQgI1s7iuTVwIdMSAFvWUcB0Ucw/s450/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+01a.png" /></a>
</p>
<p>
Now each part of the table is specific and mutually exclusive. The
classification of the Confederate troops as "Zealous" has been moved to a
footer but it could equally be an additional one-entry column. The
latter is a bit excessive for one entry.
</p>
<p>
<b>[2] Resilience Outcomes Table (Page 12): </b>
<br /><br />
Here's the portion of the page with the lookup table for the results.
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF1sHR2cixlFSDPkM_E2qMv5lFqA-vLwvpR7iM2yLuHKXdwXw7ek_Veiv3iCSbaUkwEhzQ56z17vBaarmm6ZItJZ6Z8wSev5-n4YxhJ_BL99mokL-KZwTxaWhGJx4kfl-bj2SWDei4OvA/s550/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+02.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: none;"><img class="hoverZoomLink" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF1sHR2cixlFSDPkM_E2qMv5lFqA-vLwvpR7iM2yLuHKXdwXw7ek_Veiv3iCSbaUkwEhzQ56z17vBaarmm6ZItJZ6Z8wSev5-n4YxhJ_BL99mokL-KZwTxaWhGJx4kfl-bj2SWDei4OvA/s450/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+02.png" /></a>
Looking at this in detail:
</p>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>The row for a result of 7 is exactly the same as that for 8-9.</li>
<li>Not sure what "Carry On" means as it's not defined in the rules.</li>
<li>
Not sure what "Charge" means, specifically is it the same for those charging
and those receiving a charge, as it's not defined in the rules.
</li>
</ul>
<p>
Again a quick rework gives this table:
</p>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4loUxv4UkZ2qGzJ9l1e6ELldxGxQ5-7Th365hn-1mIyQ_xjTOAmqmS9640m4J2gr6tuarjybwhWuCGVnX_uMqX7aRshEq7RpJRx1BJ5ACANzOYkuw1_vuIuI6yPAwaxIZl5mxoEjCzIk/s582/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+02a.png"><img class="hoverZoomLink" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4loUxv4UkZ2qGzJ9l1e6ELldxGxQ5-7Th365hn-1mIyQ_xjTOAmqmS9640m4J2gr6tuarjybwhWuCGVnX_uMqX7aRshEq7RpJRx1BJ5ACANzOYkuw1_vuIuI6yPAwaxIZl5mxoEjCzIk/s450/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+02a.png" /></a>
</div>
<p>
This version assumes that the actions in the table are all compulsory so
"Forced" is superfluous. Even so it's still a bit busy with lots of "Carrying
On".
</p>
<p>
I did try a version that merged like cells across rows, as there's a lot of duplication, but it was a touch too hard to
lookup values in columns. One way to solve this is to merge some cells as follows:
</p>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR_ewOjUtCewqrbPYaE2YKUIijSgxvGm15oFDKDTZLlbyWhlG7FoKXgcsusIGLkxgxsMCK1669BMdPz_ux3knejddgq2XNiNsHF4TvG86shALlrRWMqTaioibYbcevCXm1oQAp2-oMlyQ/s582/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+02c.png"><img class="hoverZoomLink" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR_ewOjUtCewqrbPYaE2YKUIijSgxvGm15oFDKDTZLlbyWhlG7FoKXgcsusIGLkxgxsMCK1669BMdPz_ux3knejddgq2XNiNsHF4TvG86shALlrRWMqTaioibYbcevCXm1oQAp2-oMlyQ/s450/20200910+-+Rebels_Yankees+02c.png" /></a>
</div>
<p>
I think this is still sub-optimal but it just goes to show how hard this is.
</p>

Photos of hobby desks are quite common. Some hobby forums run
"show your desk" threads and I enjoy them immensely. I'm always curious
to see what people's desks look like be they tidy or chaotic, dirty or
clean.<br />
</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT_CQECWqFpyqTFkepjjevTBH2ju87GKpHegZBA6SYYtcdu1BvOb5O4G1dMdyuaYo9PlYuLsf9OMe7_gpbNgTl9oFnYKWgQJu-EVYMIEHmKew3C_NhSKgnfCif843cBTcnKw22jCU8htPC/s1600/20200802+-+S8001325f.jpg"><img class="hoverZoomLink" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT_CQECWqFpyqTFkepjjevTBH2ju87GKpHegZBA6SYYtcdu1BvOb5O4G1dMdyuaYo9PlYuLsf9OMe7_gpbNgTl9oFnYKWgQJu-EVYMIEHmKew3C_NhSKgnfCif843cBTcnKw22jCU8htPC/s490/20200802+-+S8001325f.jpg" /></a>
</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
The above is a slight twist on this recurrent theme. I've numbered the
various items so I can add extra detail below and illustrate how I work.
<br />
</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
I didn't want to add a written key to the image: you'll see why when you read
the key. To identify things you'll need to switch back and forth between
the larger linked image and the key.
</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
This is easy for me because I use the
<a href="https://vexillia.blogspot.com/2020/06/tech-hint-image-zoom.html">HoverZoom</a>
extension on Firefox and I can pop up the larger linked image just by placing
the mouse over the image. For those without this facility
it'll probably be best if you open the large image in separate tab or window
and switch between them. Let me know how get on in the comments.<br />

Droppers for water & acrylic medium. These make it much easier
to control dilution etc.<br />

Mixing pots for Plaka & metallic paints. I keep these well away
from the acrylics on my main palette just in case.

My trusty two Plaka paints: red brown & signal red. I wouldn't
be without these.<br />

<li>
Vallejo paints. I have more in stock but they are the same colours
as on my desk.

<li>
Miniature paints tanned flesh, pale flesh, earth brown and chocolate
brown. Plus a bottle of cheap black paint (from tube acrylic) for
undercoating. Three colours decanted from larger bottles of craft
paint (taupe, light taupe and cream).

<li>
Metallics. Most are decanted craft metallics. One is home
mixed gunmetal.

Compared to other desks, and paint "collections", I have seen I think I use
relatively few paints. This doubtless because I have tended to use a
more restricted palette and mix any intermediate & highlight colours I
require.<br />
</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>
The photo contains almost everything I use; certainly on a daily
basis. I do have a few extra tools and the like in the desk draw such
as files, clippers, brass rod, half a dozen paints I very rarely use.
Needless to say I have a small box I bring out when I'm basing figures and a
mini-lead pile but I keep these well hidden in a cupboard especially the
latter<br />

I hope you enjoyed this tour of my painting desk. Let me know what you
think in the comments.<br />

My roles, as archivist, has been to manage the project (part time), prepare the digital content and produce the various indices via a purpose built database. Here's an <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=18HfQspMSh9mw3n6hb2hEfuFn-THTEn5R">example output from the indexing</a>.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>First published in August 1991, Hobilar, the journal of the Lance & Longbow Society, features articles on medieval warfare from the early 11th century to the early sixteenth century, as well as many flags and banners of the period. To preserve the wealth of information and detail presented in Hobilar over the years the issues have, where necessary, been scanned, lovingly restored, and converted to pdf format.<br />
<br />
To reserve a copy please use the mail form below or you can order now using the <a href="https://vexillia.blogspot.com/p/books_12.html">books page at my Waving Flag blog</a>.<br />

I am handling all general sales until the end of this year and society discounts do not apply to this item. Members of the Lance & Longbow Society (LALS) are advised to buy their copy from the <a href="http://www.lanceandlongbow.com/shop.php">LALS web shop</a>. Items from my first three painting commissions for
<a href="https://www.fighting15s.com/">Ian at Fighting15s</a> are to be used
in his latest advert. However I don't think they can compete with the
female Hussar.
